Oppo meet Ruby. She is a 10 week old Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog) mix. She is going to be a big doggo probably 70 pounds. We adopted her from the Humane Society shelter in Espańola, NM last weekend. Someone surrendered her whole litter. She likes to chew everything. Including the other dogs. They are so far not amused by her presence but they last day or two seem to be accepting that they are big brothers now.

Hi Ruby. Welcome to OPPO.
I/we hope to see more of you in the future.
Mate, she’s a cutie.

Thanks my wife and daughter are absolutely over the moon. We still can’t believe a puppy like this ended up at the local shelter while we were looking.

Adorable.
I tried looking in to dog adoption for my dad this summer. The shelters around there seem to have made it incredibly difficult to do so. They all put pics and limited profiles of their animals on line, and then asked you to choose specific ones you want to swipe right on and meet in person. Then, you had to make an appointment to meet a specific dog. Plus, the Indianapolis Humane Society required you to pay a $15 fee to make the appointment (non-refundable as far as I could tell).
When I was a kid, you just went to the shelter, you were shown through the kennels and got to meet the dogs and find out if there was a connection. For me, it has to happen that way. Although almost all dogs may be good bois ™ , not every dog and person are a match.
Needless to say, I gave up.

Cattle dogs/Heelers are one of my favorite breeds, if we had a yard etc.. I would have one for sure. Sylvie plays with one named Bungie that she loves.

We only have a small yard but we are walking distance to a hundred miles of public hiking trails and two big dog parks . So she’s gonna get plenty of time to run.

Adorable! I love herding dogs and had a Blue Heeler when I was younger and she was a good, but very energetic and destructive dog. They also have good noses and can be trained as a hunting/retrieving dog.
I love the floppy ears on the dog, makes them look much more friendly. She must me mixed with a lab or something to both get those ears and be that large.

We are also next to a million miles of trail and beaches but when we are working ( not these days) we have no yard at all. We have a dog walker come get Sylvie and she sometimes goes to play at another house, our walker is cool, she will just let her tag along sometimes. Sylvie really likes that size dog and has a couple Aussie friends so it would be great. This is Bungie, I wish we had Bungie, he is a great dog in every way.

She looks like a sweet

Sometimes I need to take a minute to step back and realize how fortunate I am to have a job that supports my whole family so my wife and kids can run around with a dog all afternoon. Bungie looks awesome. Sylvie and him look like they are having lots of fun.

Yeah we experienced some of that too. The shelter an hour away in Santa Fe had like one crappy cell phone picture of each dog and a copy paste description that only had one or two different words for each And you were supposed to make an appointment from that. I get the appointment thing during the pandemic but come on post more than one picture and take 5 minutes to describe the dog if I’m going to drive an hour+ to you. And you are right about matches. We brought our dogs with us to meet Ruby totally prepared to walk away if they were aggressive with her.

Yeah we’re thinking lab or similar. The shelter didn’t see either of the parents just the puppies. I was always around Shepards of various breeds when I was young. They do like to bite heels and destroy things. My wife‘a job disappeared due to the pandemic so we have lots of time to train.

Marci is super cute. Love the ears!

Hopefully. That’s why we decided on a puppy - start training early... we love our other shelter dog but he was fully grown when we got him and has bad habits I’ve never been able to break.

Her pets are addictive. She’s so soft.

Don’t be fooled by the cuteness - they are a destructive little handful.

She definitely hams it up for the camera.

Even more so than other herding breeds they have a very high prey drive. We lived in the country so her killing all sorts of woodland critters like opossums, squirrels and racoons was no problem but it’s something you’ll need to be aware of.
Sending the time training should be nice (not because of the job loss though). Good luck with the very cute puppy!
![]() 09/05/2020 at 17:21 |
|
One of her big brothers is constantly killing birds and lizards so for better or worse we’re somewhat used to prey drive.

Yeah I’ve had a couple dogs before and I’m itching to get another. They can be a pain sometimes, but the good times are worth the pain :)

Thanks for the lead!

I figured the pandemic was the reason for the appointments, but I’m not sure. It could also be a way to not have to have as many expensive staff or hard to find volunteers on hand all the time. I won’t be surprised if the practice doesn’t go away.
Also, a curious observation aside from the way they run things: when I was looking, there seemed to be a glut on pit bulls and pit bull mixes. I don’t know how much of that was that point in time, or if there is an overall trend that way.

Aaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwww PUPPY! Such a cute one too. She'll be a handful for a while but putting in the time to train her right will pay off. Congratulations!
![]() 09/05/2020 at 19:03 |

Get the training in early and decisively. Blueys are a right handful i f they are in any way undisciplined...they can even be dangerous. The best thing is that they are relatively easy to train compared to many other breeds. Having them in a group with other dogs helps too. Remember, these things were bred to be working dogs...so they need to be kept busy. If they are bored, they become destructive and poorly behaved food hoovers. I've seen a few turn out this way down here....

I don’t know about the DFW area but when I lived in SA there were always a ton of Pits in the shelters. Unfortunately they were very popular in the impoverished parts of town where they were more likely to be neglected and seized or surrendered by owners that didn’t have the means to fully care for them. Take a drive through the South Side of SA and it seems like every third house has a Pit on a chain in the front yard acting as a makeshift security system.

Congrats on the new addition to your family. She’s a cutie.

I was kinda afraid of that. Poor dogs. They deserve better.

Absolutely the cutest, I always wanted a B lue H eeler to go hiking with. NM dogs have the best personalities, too!

Does he have any specific type or size of dogs he’s interested in finding? I’ll toss the idea of looking into local greyhound rescues to you. Both of ours have been fantastic, and they’re relatively easy dogs to care for.
Plus with all the Florida tracks closing by the end of the years there are thousands looking for homes.

Why hello there Ruby!
Ruby (and Cornbread also) would love to say welcome.

That’s very generous, thanks. Basically, he needs an easy going, even tempered companion who is happy to trot down to the barn or garden but won’t chase the horses, is happy to sit watching Jeopardy in the living room, and eager to jump into the truck for a quick errand. Basically a good mannered companion who is just glad to be around you, and likes ear scritches. You know the type. I don’t think he wants a puppy or anything high strung or neurotic.
His last dog, Cooper, was a retriever/shepherd/who-knows-what-else mutt from the Humane Society that my brother originally adopted but left with my parents when he moved to D.C. Dad got really attached to him and took him everywhere , even on road trips, and took it hard when he died from just getting old and sick. He kinda goes back and forth between wanting another dog and not being sure he wants one because that would mean losing another one eventually. But I think on the whole, he would like a good tempered not-puppy if one came available.

Omg greyhounds. Would love to have one some day.

These are my first two, and I’m hooked. Unfortunately as racing winds down I think they’ll become even less common than they are now.
There are a few greyhound rescues that have started bringing in Galgos from Spain. A wire haired Galgo would be a nice addition. They’re like miniature Irish Wolfhounds. Well, they’re still around 60lbs but compared to an Irish Wolfhound that’s downright tiny.
